We all love spring and adding new plants to our gardens so we wanted to post a reminder to double check to be sure the plants you select are safe for pets and kids! Pets getting sick or dying from toxic plants is far more common than we could ever imagine!

They don't even have to eat the plant or seed to get sick! The poison oil from a trimmed or broken branch / leaf that they rub against can enter the blood stream....

Here is a great reference by the ASPCA. It lists many toxic plants.

Cool Treat for those Hot Dogs

As summer warms up; here is a simple to make frozen yogurt recipe you can make your pooch will flip over.

Peanut Butter Frozen Yogurt
1- 16 oz organic vanilla or plain yogurt
1 cup all natural peanut butter
1/4 cup honey

Combine all ingredients and pout into muffin pans or ice cube trays. Freeze and serve!!! It is that simple!

Some other things you can do is substitute the peanut butter for a jar of banana baby food and toss in some chopped pecans.

Some more hits is to add some shredded carrots, fresh blueberries on top or even mixed with the yogurt. Please share your recipe modifications with us and let us know what your pooch thought of this tasty treat!

It is Easter Sunday 2010. While many in the USA were enjoying this holy day and the family festivities; many in the So Cal area suddenly became consumed after feeling the shaking and watching the news footage of the devastating 7.2 quake in Mexicali. The quake was felt strongly all through California. This should be a reminder to us all to be prepared in case you have to evacuate, or need to help others in an emergency situation.

Hazen's Third Birthday

It is not often that we get to attend one of the birthday parties California K9 Kitchen caters. Hazen's Third Birthday Bash is one we just could not miss!!! Hazen like Guido is a special needs Italian Greyhound. Although they both look totally normal when you see them; it is the additional special care and attention paid to them by their human family members that make them super stars and help them lead almost normal lifes. Eugena and Russell Anthony are the proud humans of the stunning Hazen & Mike. Both are very lucky pups to be in a home where they are well appreciated and cared for. Even when you see him; you would never even know that Hazen is deaf. This is a common berth defect in many pure white Italian Greyhounds. Hazen has been trained to understand commands in American sign language. His brother Mike is trained to retrieve Hazen on verbal commend by his mom & dad or in the event he wanders off too far and can or will not respond to his signed commands. Guido's "Big 10" National Mega-Party

Guido's "Big 10" National Mega-Party was held on November 7, 2009. We are pleased to announce that we had well over 50 dogs at the party here in California. As part of the sharing in the celebration of Guido's life, and to raise money for Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation (IGRF) several of our online friends also held "Guido Party" fundraisers in their home towns!

We decided to organize this party format because so many people from our online venues commented on how they wished they could be at the party and celebrate with us. Even if you were not a party host or at at one of the parties; you too can join in on some of the fun! We have compiled the video's and photo slide shows from the other parties across the USA!

Of course we also made it easy for you to make a donation to IGRF. If this party concept or any of the video clips move you; please feel free at anytime to click on one of the "Donation" links. Every penny you donate will go directly to help dogs in the rescue system. Each year across the USA approximately 800 dogs are surrendered to IGRF. Each dog can incur as much or even more than $2,000.00 of medical and other expenses. IGRF is a completely volunteer organization.

California / Main Party

Our First video montage is an overview of all the events here at the main California party. We are proud to announce that we collected over $500.00 in cash and checks at the party; and we are receiving new email donation pledges daily! Starting in 2009, California K9 Kitchen will present a person(s) with the "Guido's Animal Hero of the Year" award. The award is presented to regular people that make a difference in improving the life of animals. Jim & Roxann Bailey are our first year recipient. We want to recognize them for their nearly 30 combined years and dedication to the Italian Greyhound breed and IG Rescue. Together they directly impact and improve the lives of so many, and have certainly made an impact on my & Guido's life.

Roy Gerber- Founder Paws for Cause: Roy is a professional Chaplin and ordained Minister. We met Roy last year when we participated in the Paws for Cause fund raising event. Roy's organization is also a non profit and he and his therapy dogs provide Chaplain Ministries, provide emotional and spiritual support for those enduring hardship or life crises. Bringing a message of hope and encouragement to those experiencing a personal tragedy; whether due to abuse, addiction, separation, sickness, disaster or even death. Susan Lauten- Pet Nutrition Consulting: Susan Lauten is Guido's nutritionist. She works in close contact with Guido's treating physicians to insure the food we make is correctly formulated specifically for his needs. Susan can help people select the right commercial food for an animal that may be medically fragile or having digestive or other medical challenges.

Advanced Critical Care- Internal Medicine: In 2005, Guido almost died because the commercial foods we were giving him was killing him. He developed bleeding stomach ulcerations and was in rapid declining health on top of his other medical conditions. Guido was under treatment at another facility when they could do no more suggested I go see Dr. Chung. Dr. Carrie Chung is Guido's Internal Medicine specialist and she saved his life. Guido would not be alive for it not for her. Dr. Chung remains part of Guido's medical team and is consulted with often by his treating physician.

Westminster Veterinary Group: Guido's current primary care physician is Dr. Nicole Dielo. Dr. Dielo has been very proactive in Guido's continued care. In addition to treating Guido with traditional medicine; Dr Dielo also practices acupuncture which Guido is also receiving.

Romeo and Valentino are just a couple dogs currently in the California rescue program. Their before and after photo's are a good example of the second chance on life the volunteers and IGRF offer to these wonderful animals!

VALENTINO

Valentino was found roaming the streets of Los Angeles. He came into the rescue program sickly thin and with a broken leg. We did not expect him to survive the night he was released to rescue.

Val is currently up for adoption. His leg is completely healed and as you can see he has put on some weight and is doing great. Valentino is a wonderful companion. His perfect home situation would be in a home with an active senior or somebody that works from home. Val loves being around people!

The Party Of The Century!

Guido, the Mascot of California K9 Kitchen will turn 10 years old this November and we are hosting a huge party to celebrate it!

We will be holding a birthday bash at Guido's home on November 7th 2009 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. We will have food & drinks for the humans & dogs as well as plenty of events and attractions for all.

In addition to the party here in Huntington Beach; there will be several other Guido Party Celebrations across the USA. Each out of state party will be hosted by some of Guido's friends. California K9 Kitchen Will be sending the party hosts cake and treat kits so all the party goers will be able to enjoy some California K9 Kitchen Treats.

The best of all; anybody can celebrate with us!!! We will be posting video and photo's of the parties here in California and across the USA for all to enjoy, leave your comments and celebrate with us.

Basic Chicken Biscuit For Dogs

You will need: 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour, 1/2 cup Unbleached Flour, 1/2 cup Rice Flour, 1/2 teaspoon Chicken base (no MSG / onion / low sodium), 1/3 cup Vegetable Oil, 1 cup warm water,
1/2 cup low fat powdered milk and
1 whole egg -- beaten

Mix all wet ingredients together added to the beaten egg then add the powdered milk. Mix completely.

Mix the three flours together. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet until it forms a dough. Place the dough ball on a bread board with wheat flour.

Knead 3 - 4 min., adding more whole wheat flour if necessary to make a very stiff dough. Roll dough to 1/4" thickness. Cut with cookie cutter(s). Bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 45 min. on lightly greased baking pan or parchment paper lined pan. Allow to cool and dry out until hard. Store in container. You can freeze to extend life.

Sweet Paw-Tato Chips

Sweet Paw-Tato Chips For Dogs

You will need: Sweet Potato(s)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (1 teaspoon per potato) Dry Oregano flakes (1/2 teaspoon per potato) And or Dry Rosemary leaves (1/2 teaspoon per potato)

Pre-heat oven to 120 to 140 degrees. Clean potato(s) and slice as evenly as possible in to 1/8" thick slices. Be sure to remove any black or green spots. Place slices into a bowl large enough to permit mixing. Add the olive oil and mix to lightly coat all slices. Add more oil if necessary. Add the oregano and or rosemary and mix again until all slices are spiced. Place slices on a cookie sheet in a single layer and place in the oven for 6 to 12 hours until chips are crisp. Flip chips occasionally. *** For best results; use a food dehydrator instead of oven drying. Follow all preparation steps then follow the drying instructions for your unit. ***

Going In for Surgery

Tomorrow is the big day! I will arrive at the Dr. office early tomorrow morning, get checked in and suppose to be the first surgery of the day. I need a good teeth cleaning and there are couple teeth that have to be pulled. This is the first time I have had to go under for my teeth cleaning. Not too bad for an almost 10 year old Italian Greyhound. Many my age are already missing many teeth.

While they are under the hood; the Dr. is going to remove a lump that has developed on my butt.

The vet and my dad are a bit concerned about me having such a big procedure under anesthesia because of my Grand Mal seizure history. I Heard them saying that the anesthesia can make me have a really big and long seizure. They have a plan and will give me some special medicine just before and after surgery. My Dad will have some of this medicine at home too just in case I have a problem in the middle of the night.

Well, that is all for now. . .Wish me luck!

My Brother Romeo!

If you are an Italian Greyhound Romeo is your brother too!

Romeo was recently found in a park in Orange County, mal-nourished with ulcerations on his eyes and nose. He was released to IGCA Rescue by O.C. Animal Services; he is in temporary foster care undergoing medical care and diagnostics for the ulcerations. Romeo has a grade three heart murmur, several abscessed teeth and two grade 2 skin cancer masses. He is undergoing a regimen of antibiotics and nutritional supplements to build him up his strength and immune system so that he can successfully handle the anesthetic for his pending surgeries. His prognosis is positive; his road to recovery long but at nine years old he has many happy years ahead of him. Basic Beef Biscuit For Dogs

1 cup oatmeal (Regular- uncooked)
1/3 cup margarine- Ok to use canola oil
1 tablespoon beef bouillon granules (low sodium / no MSG or onion powder)
5 1/2 cups hot water
3/4 cup low fat powdered milk
3/4 cup cornmeal
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 whole egg -- beaten

Pour hot water over oatmeal, margarine / oil, and bouillon; let stand for 6 min. Stir in milk, cornmeal, and egg. Add flour, 1/2 c. at a time; mix well after each addition.

Knead 3 - 4 min., adding more flour it necessary to make a very STIFF dough. Roll dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut with cookie cutter. Bake at 325 degrees for 40 to 50 min. on greased baking pan or parchment paper lined pan. Allow to cool and dry out until hard. Store in container. You can freeze to extend life.

My dad and this really nice lady that comes to the house all the time with different dogs had a booth this last weekend at the Irvine Animal Care Center http://www.cityofirvine.org/depts/cs/animalcare/default.asp For their "Super Adoption Event" Many animals got adopted and my dad and his friend raised some money for the Italian Greyhound Rescue. http://www.italiangreyhound.org/

My Adoption Day

Today is my adoption day or "Gotcha Day" I first met my dad on April 12, 2000. Today celebrates us being together for 9 years. I know today happens to be Easter too. I don't think there is any connection between the two; but we are having a big family gathering today to celebrate Easter. I am sure we will celebrate my "Gotcha Day" too.

Many of you know that my dad helps with animal shelters and rescue groups whenever he can. He talks to this lady that has a lot of Italian Greyhounds like me. Roxann and her husband Jim do so much to help little doggies that need a fresh start. Here is the story of Valentino. He just came into IG Rescue!!! Welcome Valentino! You are very lucky to have been found and touched by these two angels!

"My name is Valentino, at least that is what the angels call me; I don't remember what my name was in my previous life. I was neglected, abandoned and left to die. A good Samaritan found me and took me to a place full of sad lonely dogs; I was very very afraid but too tired and sick to much care. My leg is hurt and I haven't had food or water for a long time. I hear people talk about me like I am already dead. After awhile a lady with a different voice comes to talk to me; I think she is an angel coming to take me across the rainbow bridge. She picks me up and holds me gently but I am afraid because I don't know what is on the other side of the bridge. She puts me in a box but I can still see out; then she takes me and the box into another building; there is only one dog in this building and another angel. I am still afraid. Then I hear another voice; this must be the leader of the angels because he is much bigger than the other angels. He sits very close to the box and looks at me then starts talking to me in a soft, deep voice. I am still afraid but not so much. He asks me if he can take me out of the box but I don't know what to say so I just keep very still. He takes me out of the box and tells me I am safe and that he is going to take me with him. He puts me in a bigger box, then we leave the building. It seems like a long time to get across the bridge but finally we stop. He carries me in the box inside another building; I didn't see a bridge though. It is bright and warm in this building and the big angel starts telling me about something called Rescue and that there are lots of angels who work in this Rescue helping dogs like me. He tells me I am not going across the rainbow bridge but that he is going to take me to a doctor who will fix my hurt leg and give me medicine then I will get lots of food, water, a warm blanket and hugs. I am not afraid."

A visit from Sadie

We, the economy might be a little difficult, but hopefully my improvement in health will continue. I am responding to the new and adjustments to the medications I am on. I hope this improvement can hold so my dad can save a little money and we don't have to make as many trips to the emergency room! I am also enjoying being pampered a little more too!

My dad volunteers with the Italian Greyhound Rescue in California. This group makes sure little dogs like me find good homes and have a new chance to live their life to the fullest. Sometimes these volunteers have to transport animals from one location to another. Last weekend my dad picked up a little girl and she stayed with us for a couple of days until she could go to her new home. This is me and Tawny together. Dad told me that she has a very good home now! Too bad because my Grandpa really liked her. . . a lot!!!

Never Forget!

Today is the seventh anniversary of September 11th. There was a tragic loss of life that day that compares to no other. It was a day that revealed the evil that lurks in the hearts of some and also showed the bravery, humanity, and brotherly love humans can have for each other. It was the one of the worst days in American history while also being one of the best.

Do what you can to be a good dog today as your human probably has a heavy heart and is morning for those people that died that day. Be good today as they remember and pray also for the brave rescue workers that gave their lives trying to save the people trapped in the buildings.

Lets also remember those pets who's human was taken away from them. They will never be able to walk by there side, sit in their lap or lick a salty tear from their face ever again!

What a Life. . . yes. . . What a life!

I just got out of the hospital, and as I lay here I am reflecting back on the first and past years of my life. I am going to be 9 years old this coming November,

but should I even be here today?

I guess even at conception I was not destined to have an easy life. I have some issues due to poor breeding practices, but it was my first year of existence that will most likely also impact my final days of life. . . whenever that might be.

I suffered extreme neglect and abuse my first year. I was beat-up pretty bad which required my tail to be amputated and my entire rear section reconstructed. Even though the doctors did the very best they could do; the damage was so great that I will always have a reminder of the first months of my life. My recovery took almost two years; but I still have many lingering problems. One happens to be sever back and nerve damage.

As I get older my back pain seems to get more and painful at times. This time it landed me in the hospital. I am really lucky to have a dad that not only saved me as a puppy from the abuse I suffered; but is so tuned into me that he knew something was hurting me more than usual and rushed me to the doctor to get some relief.

I have some pain medication now; and trying to lay quietly. We need to have another test soon to see if I need to have back surgery. I guess as I get older this pain will probably get greater and greater! If the doctors say I should have the surgery; that will be a difficult decision my dad needs to make. That will be a really big surgery for me. Being a seizure dog; just going under is a risk. There is a good chance that coming out of the anesthesia I will have a seizure. That can damage all the good work the surgeons did and leave me in a worse condition than I am now.

I am really scared but I won't let dad know how much because I know he will make the best decision for me!

Before he says yes to doing a surgery; I know my dad is going to see if acupuncture Reiki and some massage can help me! Just like all the other challenges we faced; he takes them head on and researches all options first. My dad doesn't ever take the easy road out. He hunts down and exhausts all options that make my life better. That is why I get home made food and gourmet dog treats!

What A life I have had and how lucky I am to have my dad! Yes. . . what a life no matter what happens!

What can I say! Labor day just seems to be another one of those holidays that really is just an excuse to have a three day weekend. Seems to be just like a regular day! I do think my Dad will be firing up the grill later today; so that means I might get something special.. . . or something that falls on the floor. Enjoy your day! :)

Hurricane Gustav

My thoughts today shift to the people and animals that will be impacted by Hurricane Gustav.
It is almost three years to the date of hurricane Katrina that devastated the homes and lives of so many people and their pets. That is right, their pets too! People were risking their own safety because they were not allowed to evacuate with their pets. Some people finally had to evacuate and left their pets behind to fend for themselves.

I know since then laws have changed in the golf coast region as well as here in California. I know we don't have things like hurricanes here in California, but we have earthquakes. My dad is prepared in case we have to evacuate. He has all my food, treats, medicine and a complete evacuation kit ready for both of us! We hope we never have to use it; but you never know. Back to Hurricane Gustav; I hope that our leaders and the people learned from the last time. I Hope they are better prepared to help the people and pets. Homes and material things can be replaced! Living things with beating hearts can not! If you are at risk; get out while you can! Be sure your mom & dad have every thing needed to take you with them, and make sure that you are seat belted or placed into a carrier in the car so you can be safe while traveling.
Stay calm for your own good and know that you as the family pet will be one of the few things that will give your family comfort in this difficult time.

A bit off Topic. President?

I don't know about you other dogs, but my dad spent every evening this week watching these people on TV yip and yap about what this guy would do and what the other guy wouldn't do if elected president. Today some guy announced he selected a woman to be his VP! I really don't know what all this means; but how come us dogs are under represented in this race? You know that one of the guys doesn't even have a dog!!! The fireworks show was pretty cool until all the loud noises made me hide under the bed. I heard my dad say something about this happening again next week. What is the point? All these people seem to do is say how good they are and how bad the other one is. Maybe people shouldn't hold the position of president.

One more week of this stuff and I will run for president. You can be sure that I'll select a bitch to be my VP too!
