Hurricane Gustav

My thoughts today shift to the people and animals that will be impacted by Hurricane Gustav.
It is almost three years to the date of hurricane Katrina that devastated the homes and lives of so many people and their pets. That is right, their pets too! People were risking their own safety because they were not allowed to evacuate with their pets. Some people finally had to evacuate and left their pets behind to fend for themselves.

I know since then laws have changed in the golf coast region as well as here in California. I know we don't have things like hurricanes here in California, but we have earthquakes. My dad is prepared in case we have to evacuate. He has all my food, treats, medicine and a complete evacuation kit ready for both of us! We hope we never have to use it; but you never know. For more information about being prepared for an emergency, visit the health section of the California K9 Kitchen website.

Back to Hurricane Gustav; I hope that our leaders and the people learned from the last time. I Hope they are better prepared to help the people and pets. Homes and material things can be replaced! Living things with beating hearts can not! If you are at risk; get out while you can! Be sure your mom & dad have every thing needed to take you with them, and make sure that you are seat belted or placed into a carrier in the car so you can be safe while traveling.
Stay calm for your own good and know that you as the family pet will be one of the few things that will give your family comfort in this difficult time.

Best of luck my fury friends!

You are one wise pup Guido!
I saw the news yesterday and they made a point to mention about people evacuating with their animals.

We are getting reports that even though people have been allowed to evacuate with their pets; many places are not welcoming people with their pets!

This is not right!

GET UP ON ALL 4'S AND BARK OUT!!!

We deserve so much more respect!

I was surprised to hear that back with Katrina people were not allowed to bring their pets!? I think that is terrible; I mean, some people actually care about their pets like their children!

But some people think animals can be replaced too :( I guess it all goes back to getting out on your own while you can and make sure you are prepared for ALL the family to get out safely!

Prayers to all affected by all this; hope everyone stays safe!

Good tips on your Dad's website too Guido!

Yep, I was shocked when I saw this happening three years ago. Many people did not evacuate because we were not allowed. It became a huge issue here in California, and we passed a law that permits our citizens to evacuate with their pets. I guess we now need to be sure that there are accommodations for us! The battle never ends!!!
